Hollywoodbets Settlers Trophy (Handicap) (Listed)

SOMERSET MAUGHAM has had his merit rating raised from 98 to 100 following his win – via an objection – in the Listed Hollywoodbets Settlers Trophy over 2000m at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on Saturday 24 September.  HAN SOLO was considered to make for the most suitable line horse despite his involvement in the objection as he did not suffer any interference.  Accordingly, SOMERSET MAUGHAM receives the minimum two pound or 1 kg penalty which all handicap winners must get. However, as HAN SOLO carried 0.5 kg or 1 pound overweight his rating goes up from 95 to 96 despite being the line horse.

In terms of Chapter 4 of the Constitution of The National Horseracing Authority the Nominations Committee, consisting of Messrs M Currie, N Nalliah, B Ralph, A Rivalland and R Sewgoolam has appointed Miss Pippa Mickleburgh to fill the vacant position in terms of Clause 15.4.5.3 on the National Board.  The vacant position is due to Mr Ken Truter not making himself available to be re-appointed for another term.

URGENT

AHS VACCINATION STATUS SURVEY

Please note that an AHS Vaccination survey was sent to all Trainers on 2 September 2022.

Thank you.

TopBet Spring Spree Stakes (Handicap) (Listed)

TEAM GOLD has had his merit rating raised from 98 to 103 following his success in the Listed TopBet Spring Spree Stakes over 1200m on the Turffontein inside track on Saturday, 3 September.  The Handicappers were of the opinion that 3rd finisher VAL D’ ORCIA made for the most suitable line horse, which leaves him unchanged on a mark of 111.

An independent National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa (NHA) Panel consisting of Messrs G Soma, J Vermaak and K Miedema was convened virtually on 2 September 2022 to consider a Merit Rating Appeal lodged by Trainer Mr André Nel against the published adjusted rating of 77 given to ROSALIE RUNS after her win in Race 7 at Kenilworth Racecourse on 13 August 2022.

The NHA Handicappers are tasked with ensuring that all horses in handicaps have an equal chance of winning as per the rules of the NHA (Rule: 47.3.2 a handicap, which shall be a RACE in which the weights to be carried by the HORSES are allocated by the handicapper for the purpose of equalising their chances of winning). It is, however, a trend that the three-year-old crop consistently outperform their older rivals in benchmark handicaps. This is likely due to their freshness in racing, their propensity to improve more rapidly than older horses, and the likelihood that trainers take advantage of the favourable WFA for the more mature three-year-old’s early in the season. This trend flattens as the months progress as the Handicappers are able to gain better insight into the merit of each three-year-old, and as the WFA allowance reduces.

East Cape Paddock Stakes (Listed)

INTEGRITY has had her merit rating raised from 91 to 94 following her success in the Listed East Cape Paddock Stakes for fillies and mares over 1600m on the Fairview Turf Course on Friday 5 August.  The Handicappers took the view that 4th finisher DUPLICITY made for the best line horse, which leaves her unchanged on a mark of 85.  In assessing the race this way, 5th placed CELTIC NIGHT also runs to her mark, effectively making her a line horse as well and leaving her mark unaltered on 84.

Aside from the winner, two horses received rating increases.  GOLDEN DAH is up from 81 to 84, ensuring that she would meet her fellow Western Cape visitors DUPLICITY and CELTIC NIGHT on the correct terms in a handicap race, while DAME OF FLAMES goes up from 81 to 83.

There were rating’s drops for three runners.  2nd placed SANTA THERESE is down slightly from 104 to 103, PRINCESS KALISI was trimmed from 92 to 91, and lastly, CALANDRA was dropped slightly to 89 from 90.

Mercury Sprint (Grade 1)

CAPTAIN’S RANSOM remains unchanged on a rating of 124 following her success on WFA terms in the Grade 1 Mercury Sprint over 1200m on the turf course at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday 30 July.  The Handicappers were of the view that 4th placed GALLIC PRINCESS made for the most suitable line horse, which leaves her unchanged on a mark of 115.  In assessing the race this way, CAPTAIN’S RANSOM only runs to a mark of 121, hence her unaltered rating.

The NHA Laboratory was recently notified by the Association of Official Racing Chemists (AORC) that it achieved a 100% result during the 2022 international racing laboratories proficiency test. During this annual test, blind plasma and urine specimens are supplied which could contain a variety of International Federation of Horseracing Authorities prescribed prohibited substances.
