The National Horseracing Authority (NHA) confirms that an Appeal was heard at its offices in Johannesburg on Friday, 24 November 2023. 

Background 

At an Inquiry held in Durban on 30 August 2023, Jockey S Khumalo was charged with a contravention of Rule 62.2.7.  The particulars being that as the rider of TRAFALGAR SQUARE, he failed to ensure that he did not cause interference to DONTSHOOTTHEBARMAN at the 300m, in Race 6 at Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse on 16 August 2023. 


The National Horseracing Authority confirms that an Inquiry was held at its offices in Johannesburg on Monday, 13 November 2023.  Both Trainer Mr P B Mr Muscutt and the NHA were legally represented at the Inquiry.

The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an Inquiry held in Durban on Tuesday, 7 November 2023, Jockey R Khathi was charged with a contravention of Rule 62.2.1.  The particulars being, that whilst riding CAPE EAGLE, he failed to take all reasonable measures throughout the race to ensure that this gelding was given a full opportunity to win or obtain the best possible placing in Race 6 at Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse on 15 October 2023. 


The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an Inquiry held in Johannesburg on Tuesday, 14 November 2023, Jockey M Yeni was charged with a contravention of Rule 62.2.7.  The particulars being that as the rider of STRIKING ANGEL, he failed to ensure that he did not cause interference to MAMAQUERA (P Mxoli) when he shifted out, in the concluding stages of Race 8 at Turffontein Racecourse on 2 November 2023.


The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an Inquiry held in Johannesburg on Tuesday, 14 November 2023, Jockey J Gates was charged with a contravention of Rule 62.2.7.  The particulars being that as the rider of ROSE TINTED, he failed to ensure that he did not cause substantial interference to MAMAQUERA (P Mxoli) when he shifted in, in the concluding stages of Race 8 at Turffontein Racecourse on 2 November 2023. During this incident, MAMAQUERA clipped the heels of ROSE TINTED, was checked severely, stumbled, and dislodged Jockey P Mxoli. 


The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an Inquiry held in Cape Town on Saturday 11 November 2023, Jockey G van Niekerk was charged with a contravention of Rule 62.2.7.  The particulars being that as the rider of PREVALENCE, he failed to ensure that he did not cause interference to QUATERMAIN (C Zackey) when he shifted out approaching the 50m in Race 4 at Hollywoodbets Durbanville Racecourse on 4 November 2023.  


The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an Inquiry held in Durban on Monday, 13 November 2023, Jockey S Moodley was charged with a contravention of Rule 62.2.7.  The particulars being that as the rider of THE QUEEN BEE, he failed to ensure that he did not cause interference to SILKY JET (*K J Lihaba) at the 150m, in Race 2 at Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse on 28 October 2023. 

Jockey Moodley pleaded guilty and was found guilty of the charge.


The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an Inquiry held at the Vaal Racecourse on Thursday, 19 October 2023, Jockey S Khumalo was charged with a contravention of Rule 62.2.2.  The particulars being that he rode SHE’S A KLAWER in an unprofessional manner in Race 1 at Vaal Racecourse on 21 September 2023, by failing to take all reasonable measures to ensure that he was sufficiently prepared for the start whilst in the stalls and under Starter’s orders, which led to SHE’S A KLAWER jumping Riderless from the stalls. 


The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an Inquiry held in Durban on Thursday, 21 September 2023, Jockey A Mgudlwa was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2, read with Guideline M in Appendix E on the use of the crop.  The particulars being that he misused his crop by striking VIBE SA more than twelve times (16) when there were no acceptable reasons which warranted such action, during Race 2 at Hollywoodbets Scottsville Racecourse on 23 August 2023. 


The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an Inquiry held in Johannesburg on Tuesday, 5 September 2023, Jockey G Lerena was charged with a contravention of Rule 62.2.7.  The particulars being that whilst riding THE INKOSANA, he failed to ensure that he did not cause interference to SUMMERLAND when he shifted in at the 200m in Race 5 at Turffontein Racecourse on 19 August 2023.
