L’Ormarins King’s Plate (Grade 1) 

CHARLES DICKENS confirmed his 132 rating when winning the WFA Grade 1 L’Ormarins King’s Plate over 1600m at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth racecourse on Saturday, 6 January 2024. It was CHARLES DICKENS himself who was used as the line horse to rate this race, he remains on a rating of 132. ROYAL AUSSIE was adjusted to 124 after producing an eye-catching finish to finish in 3rd place. ROYAL AUSSIE was beaten 4 lengths, which is 8 points behind the 132 rated winner at level weight which means he runs to a mark of 124.


Flamboyant Stakes (Grade 3) 

ROCKIE REEF has had her merit rating raised from 92 to 102 after winning the Grade 3 Flamboyant Stakes over 1600m on a wet Hollywoodbets Greyville racecourse on Monday 1 January 2024.  The Handicappers were of the opinion that 2nd placed LADY OF POWER, 4th placed FORESHORE and 5th placed CAPETOWN BEAUTY made for suitable line horses and accordingly, their ratings remained unchanged on 105,97 and 91 respectively.


Betway Lebelo Sprint (Grade 3) (Handicap)

RULERSHIP has had his merit rating raised from 107 to 112 after winning the Grade 3 Betway Lebelo Sprint (handicap) over 1000m at Turffontein on Saturday, 23 December 2023.  The Handicappers were of the opinion that 3rd placed ALULA’S STAR made for the most suitable line horse, leaving her unchanged on a mark of 108.


The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa (the NHA) confirms that the investigation carried out by O’Sullivan Brosnan & Associates, surrounding the events that transpired at the stables of Trainer Mr Anthony Peter on Saturday, 25 November 2023, has been completed. 

Messrs A P Peter (Trainer), P A Peter (Assistant Trainer) and M D Peter (Stable Employee) will be required to answer to the following charges at an Inquiry which has been set down for Wednesday, 24 January 2024, commencing at 11:00. 


Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas (Grade 1) 

SNOW PILOT has had his merit rating raised from 109 to 116 after winning the Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas (Grade 1) over 1600m at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday 16 December 2023.

The Handicappers were unanimous in their view that HLUHLUWE made for the most suitable line horse here, leaving him unchanged on a rating of 111.

The only filly in the race RED PALACE, who tried to use her sex allowance of 2.5kg to good effect by pinching a break early in the straight, was adjusted from 93 to 108 after looking like a possible winner until very late in the race. GREEN WITH ENVY was increased by 2 pounds, from 108 to 110 having got closer to HLUHLUWE and is now rated a pound lower than that rival here.

HAT’S PRIDE, who was rated to run last and showed marked improvement in this Grade 1 event by running 5th and ZOOMIE were both increased to a rating of 106 from 90 and 101, respectively. This makes both HAT’S PRIDE and ZOOMIE equal to the 106 rated TAIL OF THE COMET, who they beat at level weights in this event.

Only one horse received a drop in ratings here, JERUSALEMA RAIN was dropped by 1 pound from 107 to 106. 


Cape Merchants (Grade 2) 

COSMIC HIGHWAY has had his rating increased from 108 to 111 after producing an impressive finish to win the Grade 2 Cape Merchants at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Sunday, 10 December 2023.  It was the ever-consistent SURJAY, who was used as the line horse to rate this race, which leaves his rating unchanged on a mark of 119. The only other horse to receive a rating’s increase was 2nd placed COUNTDOWN, who goes up to 108 from 107. 


World Sports Betting Cape Fillies Guineas (Grade 1) 

BEACH BOMB has had her merit rating raised from 98 to 117 after producing an impressive finish to win the World Sports Betting Cape Fillies Guineas over 1600m at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday 2 December 2023. 


An independent National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa (NHA) Merit Rating Appeal panel consisting of Messrs R Napier, K Miedema and J Vermaak was convened virtually on 30 November 2023. The panel considered a Merit Rating Appeal lodged by Trainer Mr A Nel against the published adjusted merit rating of GENTLEMAN JOE after his win at Hollywoodbets Durbanville Racecourse on 21 November 2023.
