An independent National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa (NHA) Merit Rating Appeal panel consisting of Messrs G Soma, K Miedema and A Sewpersad was convened virtually on 3 June 2024. The panel considered a Merit Rating Appeal lodged by Trainer Mr D Kannemeyer against the published adjusted merit rating of GREEN WITH ENVY of 127 (from 123) after his win in the DAILY NEWS 2000 (Grade 1) at Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse on 25 May 2024.

Daily News 2000 (Grade 1)

GREEN WITH ENVY was adjusted to a rating of 127 from 123 following his success in the Grade 1 Daily News 2000 over 2000m on the turf track at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday 25 May.

The Handicappers believed that MID WINTER WIND made for the most suitable line horse here and his rating remained unchanged on 116. It was also considered that MID WINTER WIND was attempting the 2000m trip for the first time in his career and felt the evidence suggested that he saw out the extra distance comfortably. MID WINTER WIND did appear to at least confirm his 5th place in the Grade 2 KZN Guineas in this event when also finishing in 5th place. Furthermore, the Handicappers also observed his official sectional time (courtesy of Hollywoodbets) found on the gallop.co.za website is as follows:

The only runner to receive a drop in ratings was FUTURE PRINCE who went down one point from 101 to 100.

TAB Colorado King Stakes (Grade 2)

PURE PREDATOR has had his rating increased from 116 to 119 following his win in the TAB Colorado King Stakes (Grade 2) over 2000m at the Turffontein on Saturday. The Handicappers were of the view that 2nd placed HOTARUBI had returned to his recent best of 116 and used him to that level to rate this race. Accordingly, HOTARUBI was restored to his best rating of 116. The Handicappers ruled out PUERTO MANZANO as a possible line horse as he gave the other runners too much ground at the top of the straight and his jockey did state that he had concerns about this horse’s action in the straight when questioned by the Stewards.

There were no other upward adjustments in this race however, PUERTO MANZANO did receive a 2-point drop after failing to confirm his 125 rating in his last 5 runs, SAFE PASSAGE was dropped to 112 from 115 and SECOND BASE was dropped from 107 to 104.
