  • Golden Horse Sprint (Handicap) (Grade 1)

BATTLE FORCE has had his merit rating raised from 106 to 113 following his success in the Grade 1 Golden Horse Sprint (handicap) over 1200m at Scottsville on Sunday 6 June.  Part of the seven-pound raise which the winner incurred is because of the fact that he was five pounds or 2.5 kgs under sufferance at the weights.  Both 5th placed CHIMICHURI RUN and 6th finisher VARS VICKY were used as line horses, which leaves them unchanged on marks of 115 and 115, respectively.

There were increases for all of the placed horses.  2nd finisher EDEN ROC goes up from 118 to 119, 3rd placed MK’S PRIDE was raised from 119 to 120, and 4th placed CAPTAIN TATTERS (who was four pounds or 2 kgs under sufferance at the weights) is up from 105 to 109.  The remaining increase was for NO LAYING UP, who was four pounds or 2 kg under sufferance at the weights and carried 1kg overweight, he was only adjusted from 107 to 109 despite actually achieving a performance figure of 111.

Five horses were given a rating’s drop.  KASIMIR was trimmed from 125 to 124, PEARL OF ASIA is down from 108 to 107, BOHICA drops to 123 from 125, IKIGAI is down from 111 to 108, and lastly SPEEDPOINT was dropped from 114 to 110.

  • Daily News 2000 (Grade 1)

LINEBACKER remains unchanged on a rating of 124 following his success in the Grade 1 Daily News 2000 for three-year-olds over 2000m on the Greyville turf course on Saturday 29 May.  It was LINEBACKER himself who was considered to make for the most suitable line horse when assessing this event, hence his unaltered rating.

2nd placed RASCALLION goes up from 111 to 123, 3rd finisher KOMMETDIEDING was raised from 120 to 122, and 4th placed SHAH AKBAR goes up from 108 to 119.  The only other increase was for 7th placed FLYING CARPET, who goes up from 108 to 110 and so making him rated equal to 9th finisher THE GATEKEEPER, who remains unchanged on 110.

No horses were given a rating’s drop as a consequence of this race.

In terms of Chapter 4 of the Constitution of The National Horseracing Authority the Nominations Committee, consisting of Adv. Altus Joubert, Mr Larry Nestadt, Mr Rodney Trotter and Mr Jonathan Witts-Hewinson has appointed Mr Rikesh Sewgoolam to fill the vacancy on the National Board in terms of clause 15.1.1, read with 15.4.5.2, of the Constitution with immediate effect.

  • World Sports Betting Legal Eagle Stakes (Grade 3)

HOEDSPRUIT remains unchanged on a rating of 108 after he captured the Grade 3 World Sports Betting Legal Eagle Stakes for three-year-olds over 1800m on the winter course at Kenilworth on Saturday 22 May.  The Handicappers were of the view that WARRIOR, who was beaten around two lengths into 5th place while conceding weight to all seven of his rivals, would in all likelihood not have run below his rating and accordingly used him as the line horse, which leaves him unchanged on a mark of 102.

HOEDSPRUIT was easily the best weighted horse in the field, and in assessing the race this way he only runs to a mark of 104, hence his unaltered rating.  2nd placed CRIMSON KING goes up from 100 to 103, 3rd finisher SOMERSET MAUGHAM was raised from 86 to 102, and 4th placed SO FLAWLESS goes up from 93 to 95.

The only ratings drop was for DUBAI LIGHTS, who is down from 91 to 89.

On 18 May 2021 the High Court in Johannesburg granted an order in an application brought by Trainer Mr M F de Kock against The National Horseracing Authority (NHA). The effect of the order is that the NHA will make available to Mr de Kock’s analyst, portions of urine specimens taken on two occasions, namely 28 November 2020 and 12 December 2020, from the horse QUEEN SUPREME, which specimens the NHA has alleged have tested positive for Caffeine and have subsequently been confirmed, containing such by the nominated reference laboratory.

  • World Sports Betting 1900 (Grade 2)

The specific conditions of this event do not permit the winner to be raised more than six pounds and no increase in the ratings of placed horses. As such, despite running to a mark of 104, SHE’S A KEEPER has had her merit rating raised from 90 to 96 following her success in the above event on the Greyville turf course on Sunday 16 May.

The Handicappers were of the view that 4th placed CROWN TOWERS made for the most suitable line horse, which leaves him unchanged on a rating of 115. Runner-up MATTERHORN and 3rd finisher SHAVOUT remain unaltered on 100 and 87, respectively, even though they actually both run to a mark of 110.

Two horses received a rating’s drop.  TRISTFUL was trimmed from 113 to 112, while MARCHINGONTOGETHER is down from 106 to 104.

The National Horseracing Authority (NHA) confirms that on 14 May 2021, a Full Bench of the South Gauteng High Court upheld an Appeal by Afresh Brands Cape (Pty) Ltd and Afresh Brands KZN (Pty) Ltd and ordered the NHA to deliver the information referred to below, strictly in compliance with the terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act, Act 2 of 2000 (PAIA).  The judgement overturns an earlier decision of the South Gauteng High Court to the effect that the NHA had fully disclosed all information that Afresh sought.

The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa (NHA) is proud to announce major funding support from The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) for South Africa’s racing and breeding industries. The funding provided by the HKJC will be applied to work which is critical to the restoration of the direct export of South African horses to international markets.

Made possible through significant funds flowing from the simulcast of South African races into Hong Kong, the funding will be allocated to assist with, amongst other things, work carried out by South African Equine Health and Protocols (SAEHP) in preparation for audits to be conducted by the European Union and the United Kingdom.  The racing and breeding industries in South Africa can expect a major boost from the long-awaited re-opening of the direct export of horses from South Africa that will result from a positive outcome of these audits.
