FINDING OF A PROHIBITED SUBSTANCE – CAFFEINE

The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa (NHA) confirms a Prohibited Substance finding arising from routine post-race specimen collection.

The presence of Caffeine, a central nervous system stimulant classified as a Class 3 prohibited substance, was disclosed following analysis of a specimen collected from ECHO after the running of Race 2 at Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse on 6 February 2026.

Caffeine can affect alertness and reduce fatigue and is therefore prohibited in race-day specimens due to its potential to influence performance. Positive findings are most commonly associated with inadvertent exposure, including the use of human supplements or contaminated feed products containing caffeine.

Following notification of the analytical finding, the Trainer, Mr G B Puller, assisted the NHA in an investigation during which it was established that an unregistered human supplement had been administered. Subsequent analysis of this product by the NHA Laboratory confirmed that it contained significant levels of caffeine.

Mr G B Puller elected to sign an Admission of Guilt for a contravention of Rule 73.2.4. A fine of R35 000 was imposed, of which R20 000 is suspended for a period of twelve (12) months on condition that no contravention of Rules 73 or 74 occurs within that period.

In determining the penalty, due consideration was given to the classification of substance, the status of the race, the Trainer’s penalty record in respect of prior prohibited substance contraventions over the preceding five-year period, and the level of cooperation shown during the investigation.

In accordance with Rule 72.3.2, ECHO is disqualified from the race.
