The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa (NHA) confirms a Prohibited Substance finding arising from routine pre-race specimen collection.

The presence of Flunixin, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) classified as a Class 4 prohibited substance, was disclosed following analysis of a specimen collected from DREAM TEAM prior to the running of Race 4 at Fairview Racecourse on 16 January 2026.

Flunixin meglumine is commonly used in horses to alleviate pain, inflammation and fever, particularly in cases involving musculoskeletal conditions or colic. While it is safe and effective when administered under appropriate veterinary supervision, its use is prohibited within defined withdrawal periods prior to racing and must be accurately recorded in a Veterinary Treatment Register (VTR).

An investigation was conducted and no irregularities or external factors were identified that could have contributed to the positive finding. It was, however, established that the treatment had not been accurately recorded in the Trainer’s VTR.

Mrs S B Kotzen elected to sign an Admission of Guilt for contraventions of Rules 73.2.2 and 10.5.14, and the penally of a fine of R20 000 was imposed.

In determining the penalty, consideration was given to the classification of the substance, the Trainer’s clean record in respect of prohibited substance contraventions over the preceding five years, the concentration detected in the specimen, and the status of the race.

In accordance with Rule 72.3.2, DREAM TEAM is disqualified from the race.
