The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa (NHA) confirms that at an Inquiry held in Gqeberha on Friday, 25 July 2025, Jockey J Gates was charged with a contravention of Rule 62.2.7. The particulars being that as the rider of MAFIABAGSTHEMONEY, he failed to ensure that he did not cause interference to SEMPRE BELLA (*J Botes) and CELTIQUE (M Katjedi) when he shifted out at the 450m in Race 1 at Fairview Racecourse on 04 July 2025.

Jockey Gates pleaded not guilty but was found guilty of the charge.

In determining the appropriate penalty, the Inquiry Board considered the aggravating and extenuating circumstances, along with Jockey Gate’s recent record in relation to this Rule, and imposed a suspension from riding in races for a period of fourteen (14) days.

Jockey Gates has the Right of Appeal against both the finding and the penalty imposed.
