NHA LABORATORY
Research and Development

Research and development play an important role at the Laboratory. The research expertise gained in the Mass Spectrometry and Analytical Support Sections is central in the development of improved drug screening and confirmatory methodologies and fully utilising available technologies. The Laboratory is experienced in investigating and developing novel mass spectrometric analysis techniques. Drug clinical trials, drug metabolism and drug detection studies on new drug entities and new formulations are constantly in progress.

Drug metabolism and excretion trials

Clinical trials on new drug entities and drug formulations are undertaken under veterinary supervision and with ethical approval from the University of Pretoria (in accordance with the Department of Health guidelines) at the Equine Research Centre of the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Pretoria, Onderstepoort. This facility conducts horse drug administration trials, makes clinical assessments when required and collects blood and urine specimens.

The objective of such studies in the horse is to investigate drug availability, phase I and phase II metabolism (including drug conjugation) and excretion rate. Subsequent studies involve the development of suitable drug detection and confirmation methodology for the drugs and metabolites in question. Drug administration trials are also important in generating post-administration specimens to test the screening capabilities of the Laboratory and evaluate existing and new methodologies.
